Most RC boats propellers spin with the same RPM (revolutions per minute) as that of a gas or an electric motor. But if not balanced with the horizontal shaft, you will notice that the propellers will vibrate since the propeller shaft will momentarily handle the stress with every spin of the propeller in the direction of the propeller’s heavy side. Because of this, the propeller will slowly lose its speed and might destroy some important components.

To prevent this from happening, you might need a few pointers on how to balance your propellers well. Here are some tips:

  • Prepare a clean and dry rag, paper clip, dry eraser marker, small hand file, 220 grit dry or wet sandpaper, eye protection and of course, your RC boat propeller.

  • First, you have to take the propeller out of the RC boat and clean it thoroughly until there are no more noticeable contaminants. You also have to clean the propeller hole.

  • Next, take the paper clip and straighten it out until it has a 90-degree angle.

  • Use one hand to hold the paper clip and place the horizontal portion to the center of the propeller with the hole.

  • Remember to wear eye protection when doing this: gently spin the propeller, making sure that it will not be dislodged from the paper clip. Once the propeller stops spinning, use a dry erase marker to mark the lowest part of the propeller blade to the soil or floor.

  • Do the same process for a number of times. Once finished, you will notice that some parts of the propeller have more marker dots compared to the others. These markings indicate the heavier side of the propeller. Smooth them by using a hand file but make sure you won’t be changing the design.

  • Wipe off all markings and repeat the spin and mark sequence. Repeat also hand filing the markers. Do this until the propellers are balanced and there are no more obvious dry marks.

  • Use the sandpaper to sharpen the blades.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert in the field of RC boats, you should take the time to know about these things as to save you unnecessary expenses just in case your propellers will be imbalanced. Doing your own maintenance will not only save you money, it will save you time as well.
